The Ultimate Guide to a Floriade Weekend in Canberra
Spring has sprung, and there's no better way to celebrate than with a weekend escape to Canberra for the annual Floriade festival. This vibrant celebration of flowers, art, and culture is one of the most fun things to do in Canberra, drawing visitors from across Australia and beyond. Whether you're a green thumb or simply looking for a colourful getaway, we've crafted the perfect itinerary to help you make the most of your Floriade experience.
Friday: Arrive and Unwind
Afternoon
If your weekend away begins on Friday, cruise into Canberra and check in to your stylish city-side apartment. Take some time to freshen up and settle in, perhaps even enjoying a quick nap to recharge for the weekend ahead.
Evening
Once you're ready to venture out, ease into the evening and the Floriade festivities with the limited-edition, specially themed Butterfly Pea Cocktail from Restaurant Two14’s bar. The delicious and refreshing floral gin and tonic with butterfly pea tastes as beautiful as it looks. Watch the colour change from vibrant blue to deep purple as you squeeze in and stir your slice of lemon or lime - inspired by this year’s Floriade theme: Science and Nature. Follow your pre-dinner drinks with entrées, mains and desserts at Canberra’s premier Italian dining precinct, Restaurant Two14. Not only is the authentic Italian cuisine to die for, it’s also just an elevator ride and a few steps away if you’re staying at Deco Hotel! Here’s a taste of what’s on the menu…

Spicy Arancini - spicy olives, taleggio cheese, aioli

Filetto di Manzo - 200g Black Angus eye fillet, crispy polenta, cherry truss tomatoes, red wine jus

Tiramisu - Savoiardi biscuits, espresso coffee, mascarpone, chocolate soil
“Simply outstanding. Pleasant and stylish restaurant with fantastic food… We’ve had some outstanding meals during our one-month Australian trip and this one ranks at the very top. Bravissimo!!!” - Google review from Kris D. R.
With all the weekend has in store, we recommend indulging in a long, hot shower, wrapping up in a plush bathrobe, and enjoying a quiet night in to recharge for the next day.
Saturday: Floriade in Full Bloom
Morning
Wake up bright and well-rested - it’s time to get your fix of flowers! But first, head back down to Restaurant Two14 for a hearty buffet breakfast to fuel you up for the day ahead. Fill up your plate from the generous selection of hot dishes - eggs, bacon, sausages and hashbrowns galore - freshly baked pastries and sweet seasonal fruit.
Now, it’s full steam ahead to Floriade - Australia’s biggest celebration of spring. Head to Commonwealth Park to wander through colourful gardens of over one million blooms. For the best viewpoint, hop on the Ferris wheel to take in the spectacular sight in all its glory. Browse the unique market stalls, catch a live performance on the main stage, and join in one of the interactive workshops - there’s never a dull moment at Floriade (see below some events not to be missed in this year’s program).
Afternoon
As lunchtime rolls around, treat your taste buds to the diverse flavours at the Floriade food and drink stalls. Whether you're craving international cuisine or local specialities, you'll find plenty to satisfy your appetite from the irresistible local vendors.
After you’ve had a decent walk, relaxed in the sunshine, wandered the stalls and had a satisfying bite to eat, venture beyond the park to explore Floriade About Town. This initiative spreads the floral fun throughout Canberra, with installations and activations dotted around the city. It's a great way to discover some of Canberra's hidden gems while enjoying the festival atmosphere. From hands-on spring-inspired activities and attractions to special events and even shopping and retail, the spirit of Floriade flows through the city. For instance, tap into your creative side with floral glass art at Canberra Glassworks, attend the immersive launch event of the Canberra Art Gallery’s newest collection, Wildflowers, or sip on a botanical-infused cocktail amongst the leafy green setting of the Atrium Restaurant & Bar.
Evening
As evening falls, you have two exciting options. If your visit coincides with NightFest, prepare to be dazzled by the illuminated gardens, night markets, and live entertainment. It's truly one of the most fun things to do in Canberra during spring. Alternatively, indulge in a mouthwatering steak dinner at Marble & Grain, where you can enjoy another Floriade-inspired cocktail and a specially crafted dessert that pays homage to the festival.
Sunday: Beyond Floriade
Morning
Start your Sunday with another delicious buffet breakfast before venturing just outside Canberra to the enchanting Tulip Top Gardens. This family-owned 10-acre garden does have a modest entry fee, but it’s well worth the price. Prepare to be blown away by the immaculate gardens boasting a symphony of colour, with tulips, cherry blossoms, and other spring flowers creating a breathtaking display. Bring along a picnic blanket and a basket of nibbles to spend the morning taking in the beautiful scenery and enjoying the live music.

Afternoon
After lunch, head back into Canberra for a final trip to Floriade before you head home. This is your chance to stroll through any corner of the garden you may have missed, spend some more time at the market stalls, or catch a ride on the trackless train for a leisurely tour of the park amid the blooms.
Events Not to Miss
Depending on when your Floriade visit falls, you might catch some special events that add extra excitement to your weekend:
